Delivery Terms
Delivery terms help define the allocation of transport-related costs, risks and responsibilities. The contract should clearly state the named place and the version used alongside the selected rule.
Understanding Incoterms® 2020
The ICC Incoterms® 2020 framework includes 11 trade terms. The choice of rule is assessed alongside transport mode, delivery point and the responsibilities of each party.
Rules by transport mode
| Transport mode | Rule codes |
|---|---|
| Any mode or combination of transport modes | EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU, DDP |
| Sea and inland waterway transport | FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF |
The difference between DAP and DPU
They differ in responsibility for unloading at the destination: under DPU the seller unloads, while under DAP the buyer is responsible. The delivery point should be clearly defined in the contract.
What to check in the contract
- The selected rule, named place or port, and Incoterms® version.
- The delivery and risk transfer point, transport and insurance arrangements.
- Customs formalities, loading and unloading responsibilities.
- Payment terms and other sales conditions.
How delivery terms differ from payment terms
Incoterms® addresses delivery arrangements; it does not determine payment due dates or transfer of ownership. These matters should be set out separately in the sales contract.
